Author Mike Richardson on meeting Gareth Hunt

"I was very lucky to actually meet Gareth Hunt on two occasions. Never did I ever think that I would go to a restaurant and go to the bar and order several drinks and the guy stood beside me would be Gareth Hunt, but that’s exactly what happened. I was in a small town called Holmfirth, which was used as a filming location for a UK sit-com called Last of the Summer Wine and one evening I went to this restaurant and there he was. I told him that I was a fan of his work in The New Avengers and he was very pleasant and talked a little, but as he was there with friends, I didn’t say too much and allowed him to go back to them with some drinks.

"The second time I met him was at the Memorabilia event (which is a cross between a convention and a trade fair) at the National Exhibition Centre near Birmingham. I arrived with some friends and saw someone else I knew there and they told me that Avengers author Dave Rogers had a stall selling Avengers merchandise and that Gareth was there with him. Needless to say, we went round and got talking to Gareth, who spoke of how he enjoyed working on The New Avengers with Patrick Macnee and Joanna Lumley, plus he held Brian Clemens in high regard for getting the investment together to make the series. The French money invested in the series did become something of a problem later in production, but initially it made the difference between making the show and not making it. Gareth spoke about the episode Target! and wanting to do the somersault through full-length sugar glass door panel, which he did after some coaching from stunt personnel. However, he stated that the exploding Police Box was worse as the charge was larger than needed, resulting in him being blown off his feet and fragments of blue paint being scattered through his hair."
